Spring Skiing on Mount Gould

May 12, 2023Date

The Onion Valley trailhead sits at 9,200 feet. From the parking lot you can see Mount Gould directly — a granite wall with three distinct couloirs splitting its upper face. The center line is the objective. In May it holds consolidated corn snow from 11,500 feet to the saddle at 12,800.

The approach takes two and a half hours with skis on a pack. At the saddle we transitioned and skinned the final 300 feet to the drop-in. The view west into the Kings Canyon drainage stopped us for ten minutes. There was no hurry.

The descent was five hundred vertical feet of perfect corn. One continuous arc from top to run-out.
